School Street, Radcliffe (COMPLETED)

The single biggest challenge was how to retain the development that lay some eight metres above the adjacent public footpath, leading down to the River Irwell at the site boundary.

Matthews & Leigh installed continuous interlocking sheet piles as a temporary work measure and introduced additional piles, when the difficult running sand conditions threatened to breach the defences.

Ultimately a combination of cast insitu concrete walls with a bag rubbed finish and masonry retaining walls were installed.  Access was restricted as the works had continued at full pace whilst a retaining wall solution was sought to ensure the completion programme would be met.
